Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in Cambridge
Today, we reviewed for the student's Latin test coming up tomorrow. We started out by reviewing the grammar, the pluperfect as well as nonne, num, and -ne, the words used to indicate that you're asking a question in Latin. We worked through a bunch of practice sentences on the three words, then changing from one to the other to see how they affect the meaning of the sentence. After he got comfortable with those, we moved on the translation passage, where he did well translating and said he was starting to intuit the meaning of some sentences more than he used to be able to. He had some challenges with sentences that start with the direct object rather than the subject, so I steered him towards ways to watch out for that, and he often self-corrected. Finally, we worked through the rest of the passage, where they're only responsible for comprehension questions and not actually translating.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in Cambridge
The student and I spent the first half of the session addressing the grammar and translation questions that he had. His translations are spot-on, so we focused primarily on a few grammar fundamentals: noun declensions, agreement of adjectives and nouns, decoding dictionary entries, and verb parsing. I then introduced the challenging third declension. We practiced identifying the declension/conjugation number of words and spent time forming noun-adjectives phrases. We covered a lot of material and the student knows a lot more than he gives himself credit for.

We read through Book 8, lines 210-220 of Ovid's Metamorphoses (Daedalus and Icarus). We discussed grammatical topics such as reflexive pronouns/adjectives, participles, and indirect statements.

We continued looking at the first declension from chapter 2 of the Latin text. Both students are getting the hang of declensions, but I do want them to work on memorizing the names of all the cases in Latin and their functions. I did a few practice sentences with the two of them. For next week, I would like to move on to first declension adjectives.
