The student's homework from school was way too easy for her, so I used my supplemental algebra material book to create a homework package for her which I have been doing for the last two weeks. The student also has a progress report card that she has to show to her father that covers topics such as effort, focus, and concepts retainment. I also expect her to complete a quiz to make sure that she is understanding and retaining all concepts covered in the week before. She did well this week. I am happy with the progress she is making.

We spent most of our time working through the practice problems the student's teacher presented to help her prep for the coming exam on Wednesday. These were on radical expressions, direct variation and indirect variation. We did all of the work on the white board so that she can work through the problems again on her own to make sure it solidifies her understanding. I noticed that she lacked the proper vocabulary associated with the functions she was learning (denominator, defined expression vs. undefined). Though not necessary for actual calculation it helps to solidify concepts that will be compounded in future courses and concepts learned.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Maplewood, MN
I met the student on Sunday evening in order to prepare him for his test on Tuesday. We reviewed a practice quiz given by the teacher, and this test will primarily be on simplification of expressions containing radicals and exponents. I noticed that the student is doing a much better job of writing down all of his work. We did a sort of 'rapid-fire' practice approach where I wrote down simple expressions that had to be simplified because for his test; he will need to be able to use the rules of simplification quickly and efficiently. By the end of the session, he was much faster at knowing for example that x^-2 is simply 1/x^2. I instructed him that any problem can be solved by taking each individual part and using these simple rules. I think he will be okay for this test. For the future, the 2 big things we will focus on are 1) memorizing and practicing the basic rules that are the keys to solving any problem and 2) doing more basic problem solving and translating that to harder problems.

Tutoring review by Anna in Maplewood, MN
The student and I were working on an introductory for his new unit focused on algebra. He had no struggles except trying to do math in his head when working with larger numbers. However, when encountering large numbers, we started by using the distributive property together in order to solve the problem. Once he knew how to apply that property himself, he could easily do the math in his head. He likes keeping his work very neat. Therefore, he likes to do the math in his head instead of showing his work steps on paper. I want to get the student in the habit of showing the steps on paper since he will have to get in that habit later on in life and so that points won't be deducted on tests or homework from not showing his work (at least this was how all my teachers had me do growing up as much as I disliked it). His attitude was still great as always. There were numerous problems on his worksheets that provided plenty of practice in itself. No scores or grades were noted. The student and I worked on fractions. We worked on multiplying fractions, common denominators, and shading shapes to show equivalence regarding the picture and the fraction. He and I worked on inequalities and number lines. He understood the number lines and how to do them, but he had difficulties knowing which side of the graph to bold for the inequality. Once we finished graphing inequalities, we worked on extra worksheets his teacher had printed out for him to do. The work sheets she had printed out were review for him since he had done them before as one of his assignments. This made him less motivated as well. In conclusion, he was great to work with and learned a lot from this session alone. It was the first session where he didn't really know what to do when approaching the assignment, so I will take that as a win that he knew exactly what to do once he had learned.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Maplewood, MN
We reviewed how to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions. We also discussed the domain of rational expressions and what are vertical asymptotes and holes. Once we reviewed the material, we solved a number of practice problems from the text book. The student was familiar with most of the concepts, but had not seen them applied to rational expressions. Once she figured out the strategy on how to approach a particular problem, she was able to quickly solve it. Overall, she felt very confident with the material after our review session.

The student had 2 assignments in history. As we read the first article, I showed him how to highlight important details while reading a long passage. He then was better able to answer the questions concerning the article. He also had a reading assignment from his textbook and worksheet. I made sure he understood the directions before I left. I also brought a large desk calendar so that he can see which assignments are due. As he completes them, he will check them off.
