Tutoring review by John in Collingswood, NJ
In today's session, we covered concepts of three of the algebraic structures most commonly encountered in science and engineering: groups, fields, and vector spaces. Our discussion of groups included binary operations and the group axioms of associativity, identity and existence of inverses. We briefly discussed fields, using the fact that both operations are invertible to solve an algebraic equation over a finite field. Our discussion of vector spaces was more substantial, including recognizing and verifying subspaces, disqualifying subsets of vector spaces as subspaces via counterexamples, understanding spaces of solutions to linear differential equations as subspaces of vector spaces of smooth functions, and constructing and verifying basis sets of subspaces of various vector spaces, including subspaces corresponding to spaces of solutions of boundary value problems.

Tutoring review by Alison in Collingswood, NJ
We started by reviewing the student's reading assignment, where she had missed a couple questions. I showed her some tips on reading comprehension and how to answer the questions. We then moved on to her math work on order of operations. She did well on these, she just missed a couple. We went over the work she had already done and made sure to clear up her confusion. We finished by completing some problems I brought on order of operations. She did very, very well on these. She tried a lot doing mental math and was great at them.

Tutoring review by Junior in Collingswood, NJ
The long division algorithm was revisited for div. of polys. The importance of changing the signs to subtract was stressed. In cases where the remainder is not zero, the solution was displayed with the remainder shown in fractional form. The new concept of factoring was introduced with the GCF. To find it, it is important to write the prime fac. of each number and then circle the common fac. This was also applied to finding the GCF of poly. terms--with exponents, the least exponent is selected. For factoring by grouping, we took 2 terms at a time, given 4 terms. Finally, we used a table to factor trinomials such as x^2 + 9x + 20.
