In high school, standardized tests did not come naturally to me. With an A average in all AP and honors classes and an overflowing list of extracurricular activities, it frustrated me that something like one test score could affect my college admissions. But like most challenges in my life, I viewed it as motivation. I took a course, got private math tutoring, took practice tests, and came up with essay prompts. Ultimately, I got a very strong score, ranking me in the 96th percentile. I have since graduated cum laude from Tufts University with a BA in English and minors in Art History and Media Studies.
As a member of the National Honor Society and Peer Leaders, I decided to use my experience to help others. I knew there had to be other students out there who were extremely bright and simply didn't excel at standardized tests. I began tutoring for the SAT, specializing in the verbal and writing sections. It was an incredible feeling to coach students through this test and watch their scores climb. I later had that same satisfaction on a personal level when I tutored my younger brother throughout his SAT preparation. He is now finishing his freshman year at his top choice university and he could not be happier. In addition to private SAT instruction, I tutored English and History throughout middle school and high school, as well as test prep including ISEE, SHSAT, SSAT, and TACHS.
I think my own struggle and ultimate success makes me a stronger tutor than if it had been easy for me from the start. I understand the roadblocks that come up in certain students' heads. Not everyone's brain works the same way and I think it is extremely helpful to be able explain things from different anglesto translate this language of the test or textbook.
I have a real love of learning and my background in English and performance (I am a freelance writer and actor) reflects my passion for communication.
