Tutoring review by Alexa in Waldwick, NJ
First, the student worked on her science homework, which covered protein synthesis and genetic mutation. I discussed with her the importance of the key terms, and how she can use the key terms when she goes back to the textbook to study for her exams. For both math and science, she may need to get a little more comfortable with reading a question, figuring out what exactly the question is asking and then answering it. For science, she does know that she can consult her textbook to assist her with her homework. Referring to the textbook is a newer skill for her, but she seems to be doing just fine. For math, we worked on using the equation of a line. We will continue to practice all of these concepts, especially solving for different variables using a graph and the equation of a line. In the past, increased repetition of a certain type of difficult problem has helped her to better understand and independently solve them, so that is what we will do.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Waldwick, NJ
Today we went over a 2-page worksheet that the student had received from class. The first page covered completing the square, which he had mostly finished and is quite comfortable with. His only question was to do with solutions of square roots of negative exponents. I instructed him that these solutions were imaginary. Next, we covered simplifying radicals and square roots. This was unfamiliar territory and took several examples, but he had many good questions as we went through the process. The main strategy was 1) factor the number, 2) find factors that have square roots, 3) simplify. His understanding of factors is very good. I also showed him that he could check his answer by putting into the calculator and comparing the value to the original radical. His understanding is good. Next, we covered discriminants (b^2 - 4ac). He asked very good questions and picked it up quite well, but will also need to practice these before he becomes comfortable with them.

We went over chapter 3, which covered limits, definition of derivative and different differentiation techniques. We reviewed the power rule, the product/ quotient rule, the chain rule as well as derivative rules for trigonometric functions. We worked on various practice problems that tested each of these topics. The student seemed to have grasped the content. We will meet next week to review and preview next week's material.

Tutoring review by Anne in Waldwick, NJ
I supervised the student completing his Module 1 assessment. Based on what I saw, I think he will score well on the assessment. He continues to get over 90% on the assignments we have completed so far. We worked on his discussion assignment for Module 1 together, and then got ahead of schedule by completing his study plan for Module 2 and studying and doing the assessment for the first assignment in Module 2. Module 2 will be all about polynomials, and the first assignment was about quadratic equations, especially understanding vertex form and completing the square to transform an equation into vertex form. He has good intuition about math, and is doing a good job of remembering his previous work.

We reviewed unions and intersections but towards everyday scenarios. We went over the practice exam for the student's exam tomorrow. At this point, I did not see her struggling with the concepts she needs to know for tomorrow. We talked about how to manage time during the exam.
