Richmond, Texas, is the seat of Fort Bend County, and was incorporated in 1837. Tutoring review by Anna in Richmond, TX
The student and I did a review of the material we've covered so far. This includes circles, solving quadratic equations, logarithms, exponents, and graphing. Overall, the student has retained stuff very well, which I was really happy to see. She remembered circles well and impressively remembered that the equation for a circle is derived from the Pythagorean Theorem, even though she didn't quite remember the circle equation itself. We reviewed the general idea of x and y intercepts and the student was able to articulate herself what those are. She remembered how to "un-FOIL" very well. The other two methods of solving quadratic equations took a bit of review, but she was able to implement the quadratic formula well and actually took only a single example on my part to remember how to complete the square. She did similarly well with logarithms and we did a brief review of negative logs. We ended this jam-packed session with a bit of graphing of linear equations. We will pick up with series and sequences next week.

Yesterday we continued reviewing and taking tests from the unit. The student showed good attention to details like negative signs and performed well on both tests he took. He showed good retention of the material since the beginning of the semester, remembering the concepts from each chapter and applying those to the test.

Today we calculated linearizations of functions, which amounted to calculating the formula for a tangent, and then plugging in values for x into it. This gave approximate values of functions themselves. Then we talked about differentials, and we did some exercises involving hyperbolic functions and their inverses. The student is quickly picking up on this new subject and is ahead of class.

During this time, the student and I worked on math homework. I worked with him to help him with two strategies on how to discover "like" or "similar" fractions. What will help him immensely is to recognize when a fraction is 1/2 and 1/4, regardless of the denominator. If he starts by focusing on numbers that can be divided by 2, 3 and 5 and memorizes what those fractions look like (e.g. 1/2= 3/6 = 5/10), then that will help him improve on the time that it takes to finish these problems.

Tutoring review by Jessica in Richmond, TX
This session was a continuation of previous sessions in many ways. First, we went over the student's vocabulary pictures after a quick journal entry. Then, we went over prepositional phrases and the creative writing she completed last time. Finally, we talked about her book list and picked our first book to read together. I asked her to edit her composition for next time.

Today the student and I worked on solving and graphing algebraic functions. We discussed three of her online homework assignments for chapter 2. She understood most of the topics covered and was able to work toward solutions fairly easily. We plan to meet again either Sunday or Monday in order to finish the three remaining chapter 2 assignments before she takes the chapter 2 test.
