Tutoring review by Julia in Longview, WA
In our Sunday session, the student and I started by working on his biology assignment, which consisted of a series of questions that related to Darwin and his theory of natural selection. We also had the opportunity to briefly talk about testing strategies, as I noticed that several of his questions included "never" and "always' questions- accordingly, we discussed the fact that absolute terms are generally red flags in potential answer pools. We continued our session by studying for his upcoming history reading quiz. We worked through the assigned pages together, discussing important themes, dates, and individuals, with a particular focus on the development of the Crusades and the Seljuk Turks.

We did broad review, focused on exponentials, getting the equations from the graph, and some word problems. I'm working with her to develop the habit of checking as we go. I expect she will be more careful on the test, but sometimes with increased confidence comes too much speed and not enough care. Strategies included thinking of secondary methods and checking with those (time permitting). I left her with some hand written practice problems with answers, asked her to check her answers with alternate methods before checking the key.

The student and I practiced his verb conjugations. I also had him translate sentences. He took a test and a quiz last week and he got an A and a B+! His grade is slowly improving. After each session, his mother and I discuss when we will meet next.

The student and I worked on review materials for her upcoming test. We focused on rational functions, operations with complex numbers, and polynomial division. She has the determination and work ethic to succeed, but there are several skills, including factoring, solving equations, and simplifying polynomials, that she needs to shore up if she is to be successful in this class. We will focus on these areas in future sessions. She is definitely capable of doing very well in this class.

Tutoring review by Rebecca in Longview, WA
The student is moving along well with division work, and is starting to grasp one-step division word problems well. One area where she still needs to concentrate is when a problem calls for multiple steps. Today we worked on her homework that included adding and subtracting decimal numbers. The math was not complex, but she struggled with knowing what numbers to add and subtract, and in what part of the problem. Once she understands the order of steps, or what steps are necessary, she completes the math without a problem. Going forward, we need to work on multi-step word problem comprehension.

The student and I focused our study on an upcoming essay on Kant. We discussed the key concepts at play and reviewed her professor's grading mechanisms. Then, we outlined and analyzed each argument that she will make in her paper. She left the session in great shape moving forward with regard to her major paper.
