Tutoring review by Katelyn in Linwood, NJ
My student missed two days of math class last week due to an illness so we had a lot to catch her up on. The class has now moved into a new unit of their three part class and is focusing on probabilities. We focused on really getting the theoretical concepts and terminology understood in sections 6.1-6.4, which is the material her class has covered in her absence. Luckily, she had a worksheet from the missed class that a friend gave her and she was able to fill it out using their class notes. Probability notation is a little difficult for her, especially speaking in terms of "and," "or," and "not" (and their corresponding symbols). We drew a Venn diagram to help her understand overlapping sets and independent sets, and shaded in regions for "or" as well as "and". Finally, we worked ahead on sections 6.5-6.7, which were about permutations, contingency tables, and Monte Carlo simulations. We did a few sample problems from each section to apply the concepts. She seemed to understand most of them, and will have further instruction this week as well (though she will be missing more classes).

Tutoring review by Kristopher in Linwood, NJ
We reviewed the ANOVA and the context in which one would use an ANOVA. We also looked at how to interpret the output from an ANOVA. The session went well. We reviewed the directions and some questions for an upcoming assignment. We also talked about how to write up the results of the ANOVA. By the end of the session I believe the student had a good grasp of the concepts reviewed. The student continues to do well on her homework assignments each week.

Tutoring review by Jackson in Linwood, NJ
During this session we continued our recent trend of building the student's math skills up for her test. We finished 5th grade math and began our examination of 6th grade math. Specifically, today we looked at ratios and percents. She is a sharp kid; she picked up everything quickly. At our current rate she will easily be up to speed by the time her test comes around. Our plan for the next few sessions is to finish with 6th grade math, then to return to the specific questions that she will see on the test.

Tutoring review by Gerard in Linwood, NJ
The student and I started by going over the verbal section she had worked on since our last session. She did better on the reading comprehension than the vocabulary, so we went through a few examples of fill in the blank vocab questions. She seems to understand what these questions are asking for, but needs to work on increasing her vocabulary if she wants to improve in this section. I stressed the importance of learning unfamiliar words she encounters, and we talked about some strategies she can use to help predict what words will be correct. For the second half of the session, we started to review some geometry concepts, including identifying different types of triangles, calculating angles in a triangle, the triangle inequality theorem, and Pythagorean Theorem. I will send her a practice set to reinforce the topics we talked about today. Next time, we will continue with our geometry review.
