Tutoring review by Shene in Thousand Oaks, TX
This was my first session with the student. 聽We began with two different reading surveys. 聽I wanted to know how he feels about reading, how often he reads for pleasure, what he chooses to read, etc. 聽This also gave me an opportunity to see him write. 聽I noticed specific phonics skills he was struggling with in his writing, and made notes to work on those in future sessions. 聽He then chose a book that he owned to read to me. 聽After reading, I asked him comprehension questions, which he answered correctly. 聽I then administered a reading test. 聽The student tested at level 17, which is a beginning 2nd grade level. 聽We will start at this level and work up. 聽I left the leveled book with the student for him to read again before our next session.

The student has his final in calculus and he wanted to go review some of the topics that he was still struggling to understand. 聽They varied from working with limits dealing with infinity, improper integration, integrating with trig functions, and using derivatives and graphing hyperbolas. Overall, the student looks like he has a good grasp on a lot of the material. 聽He can definitely do very well on his final. I wish him the best of luck.

Today we went over chapter 11. We went over physical properties of gasses liquids and solids. We paid special attention to energy requirements for phase changes since it was the most math intensive. 聽We also reviewed polarity of substances as well as intermolecular forces.

The session began by me introducing the student to a new revising strategy. 聽He then used the technique to revise his current piece. 聽Next, we used a travel guide to discuss how to begin a piece of writing by describing the setting. 聽He then selected a photograph to create a new story. 聽He did a good job of learning and applying the revision technique I introduced to him today.

Tutoring review by Neil in Thousand Oaks, TX
The student and I reviewed how to balance chemical equations again (she seemed to understand how to do this fairly well after I explained to her how to do it). In addition, I taught her what a 'mol' of something is, as well as introduced to her the concept of stoichiometry. Stoichiometry hasn't been taught to her yet in class, but I could tell that she was beginning to grasp this concept towards the end of our session.
