What do you need to know before taking the LSAT?

The Law School Admission Test, or LSAT, was designed for the purpose of helping law schools assess which of their applicants are best suited for success in law school and in the broader legal field. Accordingly, the LSAT is split into four sections which each focus on a different skill set that is required for success when studying law. The sections are called Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Writing. The paragraphs below will provide a closer look at the content and format of each of these sections.

The first LSAT section, Analytical Reasoning, is also often called "Logic Games". This is because the problems you'll need to answer in the section have an almost game-like quality to them. The section features a series of puzzles that you'll need to work through using your reasoning skills. You may be asked to do things like reason using conditional statements, infer what could be true based on the information provided, or infer what could be true based on new information. You'll have 35 minutes to complete a few separate puzzles, so you'll need to work quickly to make sure you don't run out of time.

The next part of the LSAT is called Reading Comprehension. This test section will ask you to read through a series of written passages that may focus on a variety of topics. The passages will be dense with complex information, so you'll have to read carefully to make sure you don't miss anything. After reading each passage, you'll be tasked with answering some questions about its content. You could be asked to identify the passage's main purpose, evaluate words in context, and determine how newly presented information would affect the passage.

Next, you'll also need to complete two Logical Reasoning sections, which will have a time limit of 35 minutes apiece. This part of the exam is concerned with your ability to analyze, critically evaluate, and complete various arguments. You'll be tasked with reading a number of excerpts from sources like magazines, newspapers, and advertisements. There will be one or more questions that you'll have to answer about these excerpts and the arguments they contain. For instance, you could be asked to identify different parts of each argument and how those parts relate to one another.

The last section of the LSAT, Writing, is a little different than all of the others. Here, you won't be asked to complete a series of multiple-choice questions. Instead, your job will be to complete an essay based on a prompt that you're given. This prompt will give you two options to choose from and you'll need to pick one of those options and explain why your choice is the right one. There aren't actually any right or wrong answers here, though. Rather, the point of this section is to give law schools a chance to see your ability to argue in the written form. Additionally, it's important to note that this section won't count towards your final LSAT score.
