I believe that all students can experience success in learning. Learning needs to be individualized according to different learning styles.

I would first get to know the student. Ask them about their interests, extracurricular activities, and hobbies. I would ask them to identify their strengths and weaknesses and help them set some goals for our sessions. I would also ask them to commit to several things they are going to do to help meet their goals.

I like to scaffold learning. Let them have some experience with the information, provide some guided learning, let them complete some independent practice, and check for misconceptions/errors. Then let them have more independent practice and experience success. Students are more motivated when they have success.

I would help them set smaller achievable goals and take the time to celebrate those smaller achievements along the way to completing the overall goal.

I would try alternative teaching techniques because maybe the learning style I'm using isn't the best way for that student. Try something visual...draw it, diagram it, and chart it....make up a song or make it a game...take a different approach.

Struggling with reading comprehension is often at the root of students' learning difficulties. Reading comprehension is mainly improved by reading with the student and having them do more independent reading also. I've used several online programs that improve reading comprehension.

First, I need to assess where they are academically. I often like to give a learning style assessment first so that I can choose teaching strategies that best meet the needs of my students.

Make it fun! There are lots of online games, reviews, and apps that give students practice with content in fun ways. Technology helps motivate a lot of students today. Also celebrate successes along the way.

I use a lot of different questioning techniques and have students produce a variety of products to make sure they understand the material. Having students use the information or skills in a variety of ways makes sure they truly understand it. Diagram it, teach it back to me or another student, use the skill to accomplish a new task and go above simple recall of information.

Celebrate success along the way. Break tasks/goals into smaller steps and celebrate these successes. I am very good at asking questions in such a way that students work through the answer. I don't accept "I don't know" as an answer. I help them see what they do know and then work with them to solve the problem/accomplish the task.

Pre-assessment is important to get a baseline. And then during the learning process, I have checkpoints to see where they currently are and then go from there. Checking for understanding along the way is very important.

If I have taken the time to get to know my student, assessed their learning style, and pre-assessed their academics, it is easier to adapt to my students' needs. If one method isn't working, then I will try something else because education isn't one size fits all.

I tend to create a lot of my own materials. I pull in a lot of internet resources and use technology as often as possible. Examples are video clips, apps, Ted Talks, and YouTube.edu.
