Atarah
Certified Tutor
I have been a tutor for over ten years. The most enjoyable part of tutoring is helping the students. It is amazing to see the progress students make during sessions, over several sessions, or when students report success in their targeted classes. I am always ecstatic at the excitement students have once the necessary or new information clicks and they are able to move forward in their studies.
I am a great tutor because I am sensitive to students' needs and assess where they are academically in order to create an academic plan that is tailored for their success. I have 10+ years of experience as a tutor in the following areas: English, Spanish, Chinese, testing, essay related exams, resume writing, scholarship applications and related subjects. I have tutored students with special needs and various learning abilities, students with language and cultural differences, students with little to no computer skills and non-traditional students, many of whom are the ages 40 and up. I have also serviced students from the grammar school level to the collegiate level. Students are very comfortable working with me and appreciate my patience with them. As a result, I tend to mentor students, giving academic advice and guidance to help them plan for future academic and/or professional endeavors.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe a tutor must be patient and meet students where they are in order to move forward. Creating academic study plans is the best way for students to focus their studies with a specific goal in mind. I encourage students to be realistic in their goal-setting (i.e. giving oneself enough time to develop a skill, etc.), as well as challenge themselves accordingly. Either way, as a tutor, I am a guide that will help each student stay on track with his or her academic goals.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In first sessions, I will get a clear understanding of the student's goals as well as a sense of the student's strengths and weaknesses. Identifying these items will project necessary materials for tutoring, the current level and confidence of the student, and the number of sessions needed in order to meet a stated academic goal. A study plan and/or tutoring plan will also be made. First sessions are great for marking a student's current level in order to later evaluate a student's progression in his or her studies as a result of tutoring.
