I am currently writing and analyzing data from my doctorate research study conducted on teacher learning communities in an online learning environment.
Needless to say, data plays a very big part of being able to maximize teaching and enrichment of content. By using informal and formal screeners along with pre assessments - I will always have a map of where to take any tutoring session.
Having an academic and practical elementary/middle school application understanding of data definitely enforces corrective instruction, reteaching, or content enrichment that will occur.
I have also worked a great deal with middle school students in pilot programs that center around blended and asynchronous learning.
I am entering my 6th year as an elementary/middle school teacher. I have worked with students in grades 2-8th and bridge programs for students 9-11. My focus has been in math, ELA, technology, and science (5th/8th).

What is your teaching philosophy?
Students learn best when they are challenged. The notion of constructive challenges in task orientated teaching sets students up for academic success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Students will be given both a formal and informal pre-assessment designed to provide data to better target areas of instruction. The assessment will be short - but targeted to either domains or standards.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By enforcing strengths that the student already has in academics. Various exposures to different methodologies to approach a problem often nets gains for students.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Content and material that is both engaging and relevant to the student goes a long way to keeping them motivated.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
A unit of instruction with a targeted assessment for areas of struggle will inform me which content needs to be retaught, differentiated, or enriched.
