Certified Tutor
Little did I know becoming an educator would be more than a career choice; it became a time for my own character education. The years I served as a classroom teacher were as much about me learning as they were about instructing others. Since then, my commitment to support the development and self-improvement of others has not wavered.
Ten years as a public school teacher equates to approximately 2,000 students and was a pivotal time in cultivating skills as an instructional designer. It was also critical in honing my abilities as a facilitator who successfully engages participants and adapts instruction to meet diverse learning styles.
I am NYS certified English teacher with ten years of instructional, design and assessment experience for both general and honors programs, and a Master of Science degree in Adolescence Education. I specialize in tutoring English, Literature, Writing, Vocabulary, SAT, ACT, NYS English Regents, and general topics related to language arts.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe students will rise to high expectations and benefit from meaningful feedback. I appreciate rigorous instruction, but I also know that learning experiences should be adaptable.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In addition to making a good impression, I would clarify any questions the student might have relative to objectives, as well as expectations to get the most out of tutoring.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By guiding a student to set purposeful goals for him or herself.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Through demonstrating enthusiasm in the content and setting high, but realistic, expectations for the student.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would take a different approach by leveraging a different skill learned easily by the student.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
There are several strategies, such as reading comprehension questions that give the student a purpose for reading or using graphic organizers.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I have always found it most effective to connect learning to concrete situations.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Misconception checks are effective, as well as giving students an opportunity to reflect.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By setting attainable goals and consistently acknowledging accomplishments.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I familiarize myself with the school or teacher's curriculum and objectives to present a unified approach when tutoring.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Technology is a must, as well as homework, assignment sheets, or project outlines that pertain to the lesson, as well as any relevant texts.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I assess what the student knows about the given topic and allow them to develop objectives for what they want to know.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I like to model how learning can often be broken up into small steps.
