Recent Wood River Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Julia in Wood River, IL
In our session last night, the student and I began by continuing to study for an upcoming unit test in history. We reviewed the causes and effects of the Crusades, and discussed the implications of the Great Schism. We then did some research for his Greek and Roman slavery paper, and pulled quotes and paraphrases to utilize in an upcoming outline. As usual, the student was clearly dedicated to learning the material, and demonstrated astounding memory for the dates and names that we studied.

Today, the student and I worked on trigonometry. We focused on how to utilize sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant. We worked on putting them into the calculator and using those trigonometry functions to find the other sides and angles of triangles. He seemed to forget a lot of the information from the beginning of the semester, so we reviewed those functions. We got through 15 of 60 problems of the review guide. I gave him examples and parts of the book to memorize. He needs an 84 on the final to get an A in the class.

Tutoring review by Ben in Wood River, IL
The student said that the test she had was hard, but that there were one or two "trick" problems she knew she got right while most of her classmates answered incorrectly. Her proofs were also not too difficult, she said. In fact, we made some further progress with these today by reinforcing ideas of not only stating all given information, but being sure to use all of it as evidence for a substitution or transitive property statement. Once she exhausts these options, as well as angle or segment addition statements, she'll have all the evidence she needs to complete the proof and won't need to start making guesses out of thin air at statements that might be true or relevant. We added some review of midpoint formula and translation fundamentals to keep her ahead of her homework - this way she'll have less piled up by the time Thursday rolls around.

Tutoring review by Tam in Wood River, IL
The student and I discussed naming ionic versus covalent compounds, identifying main group versus transitional metals in which a Roman numeral is required, adding prefixes to covalent compounds if necessary, identifying single versus polyatomic anions, writing chemical compounds from given names, and balancing out charges by adding subscripts. We also reviewed how to draw Lewis structures step by step (counting valence electrons, arranging atoms, assigning electrons, checking octet). He understood the materials, but more practice would be helpful since Lewis structure is always a challenging topic.
