Tutoring review by Sam Davidowitz-Neu in Newport, WA
During the first half hour of this session, both students and I continued working with sequences. The last hour of the session, the students and I began drafting a list of topics that had given them difficulty throughout the year in order to find a starting point for beginning to prepare for the assessment test in June. We worked on completing the square.

Tutoring review by Michael in Newport, WA
The student scored within the 70's on a past test. Tests are not allowed to be taken home to study from, so I asked him to recall or find similar problems anywhere at his disposal that represented the hardest, most confusing problems from the test. We solved two problems together. His logic and reasoning was good, once again, but only after I lead him to possibilities of methods to use. With his difficulty of initially recognizing how to set up problems based on which theorems and formulas to apply, I strategized with him (because once it becomes apparent which method to use, he does very well). I suggested he keep a summary/formula/diagram sheet with him so that as he solved problems and came across major ideas and associated formulas, he can return directly to this organized, simplified sheet to solve other similar problems without having to sift through the book to verify situations and formulas. The simple act of summarizing and documenting important formulas and problem solving techniques for later use also helps recall and understanding of the application of these methods in later problem solving. We finished by going into the next section of study, calculating the surface area of multiple volumes. We chose the most difficult shape to calculate from his teacher's introductory sheet, a "partial" cone, where the top was "cut off." We reasoned the overall method (solve for the entire cone, including the "missing" portion, then subtract the amount of the missing portion, which would result in the actual, bottom portion). Then we verified formulas in the book, and he updated his summary sheet. Then we used actual values to solve the problem, which he did very well at that point.

Today we reviewed for both Chemistry and pre-calculus tests. We went over a few things on the student's chem homework involving solubility as well as some nuclear chemistry mostly the particles involved in nuclear decay. We also did some combinations review for his precalc class and he seemed to have a good handle on these topics.

Tutoring review by Sophia in Newport, WA
During my session with student A, we worked on reading comprehension questions for Act III of Julius Caesar. She struggled with the sentence structure of her responses as it was difficult for her to word the answer as a complete sentence. Her attitude toward the material seemed positive. As a strategy, I showed her that in order to answer the reading comprehension questions correctly one must go back into the text and reread the section which contains the answer. She seemed to understand the characters and plot much more clearly as we read certain sections together, acted out the lines and deciphered their meanings together. During my session with student B, we worked on an earth science review packet. She did not seem to struggle very much with the packet, though she had not originally read through the packet reading section before answering the questions. As a strategy, we read the packet together, highlighting the important facts that would most likely be tested in the question section. She did very well on the practice questions and seemed to understand the material well.

Tutoring review by Nicholas in Newport, WA
Today the student and I reviewed some pre-algebra homework problems in preparation for his test tomorrow. We mainly covered combining like terms and the distributive property. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session. I advised him to be very careful with minus signs, to understand that subtracting a negative number is equivalent to adding a positive number, to aim to have just one variable on one side and one constant on the other side, and that multiplication and division have the same properties as each other. I left him with a few problems where he has to solve for X that is in a fraction.
