Tutoring review by Jeremy in Easton, MD
Today was the start of our new date/time, Thursdays @ 5:15PM. We prepared for the student's math exam that she has tomorrow. We specifically covered multiplying proper fractions, multiplying improper fractions, multiplying mixed number and whole numbers, dividing a fraction by a whole number, and solving real world problems. Her difficulty revolved around solving real world problems. She did a pretty good job with multiplying and dividing fractions. She generally runs into problems when she rushes through her work. When she does not pay close attention to her work, she may choose the correct procedure, yet her math is off or she will not completely simplify an answer. We did additional simplifying problems to help remedy this, and she did better. Another thing that was noticed was that she didn't always read directions carefully and, for this reason, I have suggested that she begin to circle/underline all of the key instructions listed above her questions. For the word problems, she sometimes did not know how to approach the word problem, and what action should first be made and what we would want to search for. With gentle hinting and prompting, she was able to navigate through the rest of the problem. These problems were not simple problems, but multi-step problems which she did not have a lot of experience with. After completing two more problems, I devised a similar problem myself, and worked on it with her. We reviewed it a few times until she was able to understand the reason for each step. I expect her to do a wonderful job on her exam tomorrow. I explained that when dealing with fraction word problems, the idea most of the time is to find the missing fraction, and once we calculate the other fractions of the problem, we add them together and subtract from the whole to acquire the missing fraction. I explained this concept with pizza, among other examples. We talked about completely finishing the marathon/race, and that we don't just give up/stop before the finish line. We must double check our work and make sure all questions/instructions are answered and followed. She did a great job this evening despite facing issues with the word problems. She maintained an upbeat personality and was a pleasure to work with. All work and extra problems were left with her. She noticed that, when she takes her time, she does a much better job at completing the task at hand in a more thorough and successful manner. We plan to meet again next Thursday. She was given an algebra packet that we will review next session.

The student and I worked on understanding different types of graphs, creating and interpreting them using math website. We worked the following sections: 1. Interpreting line plots (17 questions) 2. Drawing Line Plots (14 questions) 3. Create and Interpreting Line Plots (24 questions) 4. Stem and Leaf Plots (17 questions) 5. Bar Graphs (15 questions) and 6. Histograms (5 questions). I made sure to work with him on each of these concepts until he had achieved at least 80% proficiency on each. He can continue to work on Histograms on his own until he achieves 80% proficiency as his homework. During our next (and last) session, we will review over any concepts he has trouble in and I will help him prepare for his final.

We worked on parent functions and function composition. The student struggled most with the domains of composed functions. Good attitude! I tried to visualize the issue with domain conversions like a machine or flow chart, it seemed to help.
