What Can Raleigh-Durham ACT Prep Help Me Review?
The ACT consists of four required sections and one optional Writing section. Math, Reading, English, and Science are all mandatory. So that we can provide you with a better understanding of what to expect in each section, we'll go into detail about each one.
In the Math section, you will need to know number systems, numerical reasoning, functions, probabilities, geometric shape, and solid measurement calculations, distributions, data collection and analysis, and how to solve, graph, and model expressions. You will also need to know how to interpret equations. All of these are things you should have learned in Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. This section is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions that measure your mathematical skills. You are allowed 60 minutes to answer all the questions, and you are allowed to use certain calculators.
For the Reading section, you will be answering questions based on passages you are given. These questions will measure reading comprehension skills typically found in first-year college curricula. You are given 35 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions, so you must work quickly and effectively to ensure you are able to answer them all. You will need to identify central ideas and themes, summarize ideas, and understand different types of relationships. Determining word and phrase meanings and differentiating between facts and opinions are also skills you will use in this section.
The English Section also requires you to answer questions based on passages. All 75 questions are multiple-choice, and you are given 45 minutes to answer them. This section measures your understanding of English, production of writing, and knowledge of language skills. You will need a strong understanding of topic development, organization, unity, sentence structure, punctuation, usage, and grammar. You should also be able to recognize the style and tone of the language in a passage.
In the Science section, you will have 35 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions. This section will measure your analysis, reasoning, problem-solving, evaluation, and interpretation skills. The classes you should have learned these skills are Biology, Earth and Space Sciences, Physics, and Chemistry. You will need to be able to manipulate and analyze scientific data given to you in various formats. You will also need to know how to use the scientific method as well as other tools, designs, and procedures used in scientific experimentation and investigation. There may be a short experimental section after this one, but it is not scored.
Lastly, the optional Writing section consists of one question with which you are given 40 minutes to write your response. You will be presented with an issue followed by three different perspectives on it, and you are required to write a response that offers your own perspective. You are also required to analyze connections between your own perspective and at least one of the three provided perspectives. This section will assess the writing skills generally taught in high school English classes and entry-level college courses. You will need to know how to draft and organize ideas as well as analyze and compare arguments. This section must be handwritten unless you are unable to do so due to a diagnosed disability.
Some other things that are important to know about the ACT are that there are several testing dates per year, and each test begins at 8:00 AM. This means that if you take the ACT, you will be done around 12:35 PM. If you opt to take the ACT Plus Writing, you will be done around 1:35 PM. Also, you are only allowed to use a #2 pencil for the test, and it is recommended that you answer every question, even if you have to guess the answer. You will not be penalized for guessing.

I tutor purely because I enjoy it. Education has opened up so many doors for me, and this is largely because I was fortunate to have some amazing teachers growing up who made learning fun (or at the very least not miserable). My goal is to do the same for each one of the students who I work with, and find ways to make even the most abstract concepts or complex math problems "click" in...

I tutor kids of all ages, and specialize in those with ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Asperger's and Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as those with emotional and cognitive disorders. My preferred subjects are test preparation (SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.), Math, Science, and English. ... I think it's very important that I relate to students on a personal level so they truly understand that I want them to do well. Once that bond is made, we can work together toward a common goal. I also determine early on how students learn. For example, some kids are visual learners, while others need to have questions read to them. It's amazing to see the transformation in a student when you hit upon that student's learning style. Also, I think it's important to be able to recognize when a student is getting overwhelmed and you need to step back and take the pressure off.

I have tutored many people in the past - from elementary school kids to Duke University athletes. I really enjoy the challenge of helping students understand material that was previously foreign to them. I am highly dedicated, make my own lessons and try to make learning as fun as possible.... To make learning as fun as possible. Learning should never be frustrating or painful. There is always a way to enjoy the process!... I make my own lesson plans and believe in lots of practice. Sometimes homework assignments aren't enough to ensure a student understands the material adequately.
