Additionally, I see no value in simply telling a student that they are wrong, or that they are incorrect. By working with each student through the thought processes and steps that led them to an incorrect answer, they attain a better understanding of why an answer is wrong and how to arrive at the correct one. Recent Literature Tutoring Session Notes
We read a short story together and went over key plot points, character development, vocabulary, and themes. We also began learning how to take notes within a text.
The student's assignment was to complete a Venn diagram comparing three of the source materials of interviews she had done. With this assignment, we worked on responses through poetry, personal narrative, and interview. The poem we analyzed was only eight lines long, and when she began to dissect it I realized that she was engaging on a very deep level even though the poem was very straight forward. We talked about finding balance in poetry and how sometimes you will have to read more into the poetry to find the meaning but to also be careful not to miss what's right in front of your face too. After we broke down each source she had no trouble filling out the diagram and she did a pretty great job!
In this session, we covered three new colonial-era works for the student's English Literature course. We discussed the main themes present in these narratives, including the prevalent theme of the binary (Puritan versus non-religious, good versus evil, colonist versus native, etc.). We discussed the language behind many of the texts and discussed how they represented or painted a picture of Puritanism. We then transitioned to studying for her Early Christianity course, where we prepared for her quiz the next day. We discussed terminology and historical elements, primarily focusing on Luke and Paul. We prioritized content areas to ensure that she is well prepared for her quiz.
We read aloud (as assigned by the student's instructor) the first couple of chapters of Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." The importance of reading aloud was immediately apparent when the dialogues began. We discussed some cultural references, stylistic and narrative techniques, and the tenor of the passages.
We read through another assignment. This was incredibly dense, but the student did a good job working through it. She's learning to take her time and let things sink in. I am seeing some slow improvement for her.
