Today we went over Chapter 3 of the student's social studies text. We worked through the assignments pertaining to the chapter, and completed the multiple choice and short answer sections. She recognized key concepts from the chapter but sometimes mixed ideas together (like characteristics from different kingdoms), so we talked about some strategies for note taking and reviewing while reading to keep everything a little clearer. She did mention that she usually takes notes on the chapters but hadn't for this one, so it made sense that it was fuzzier. For next session, I asked that she outline and, if possible, write a draft of her essay question for Chapter 3 for us to go over together. She will also read and take notes on Chapter 4 and complete the multiple choice questions, if time allows.
Today the student and I discussed her study of WWII. She is working on memorizing the dates of the war and the members of the Axis and the Allies as well as learning about leaders like Hitler, Mussolini, and FDR. She has a quiz coming up next week. So, after discussing these topics, we also talked about possible study strategies. We discussed using flashcards and having her family ask her questions to prepare for the quiz. She has good study notes from class, so I urged her to use flashcards to help her remember all the key terms, people, and dates.
The student has a social science test tomorrow that she wanted to review for. The work was about the different American Indian tribes that populated North America. She gave me her book, and I reviewed the work with her and asked her questions. She used the dry erase board to write and draw, and we also used Google images to look up certain terms such as "glaciers" and "caribou."
