Now that we have finished with transcription and translation, the student and I had a chance to get a head start on the next unit. During the session, we spent time looking at the different phyla and how they differ.

The student has a midterm next week and she is currently covering DNA replication, transcription and translation. She needed to go over replication, the enzymes involved in DNA replication as well as transcription. We went over replication, the unzipping of DNA, the replication bubble, the importance of the 3 prime and 5 prime end of DNA. She said she needed to learn the details but understood the concepts. We also reviewed some mitosis and meiosis to get ready for her midterm.

In yesterday's session we reviewed for the student's test on Tuesday this week. The main topic we covered was entropy, and how it relates to the transport of different molecules across a concentration gradient/plasma membrane. I had the student explain her notes to me, then explain a variety of diagrams in her textbook, as well as some diagrams I drew up for her. She seemed to get the hang of it pretty quickly after we discussed it and related these molecular processes to bigger more well-known concepts like gravity. Finally, we went through the "end of chapter" review questions, and discussed how to break down and analyze a question, then how to begin an approach to tackling different biology questions. I told the student to review her notes, and she is doing that tonight studying for her test. No concerns from this session.

Today, I met with the student to review for his upcoming exams. We went over the math notes first, and I quizzed him on the theorems and formulas, that he will need to use to solve problems. We also worked through the proof in the notes. Next, we worked on studying for his bio test, which is on plants and their processes (photosynthesis). Finally, we looked over and practiced for his English vocabulary quiz, which was 80 words. We aren't exactly sure of the format, but we worked on recalling the words from the definition.
