What can a Denver MCAT class cover?

The MCAT consists of four separate sections, each of which evaluates different skills you will need in order to be successful in both medical school and your future medical career. Let's take a closer look at each of the sections found on the MCAT and what skills you should review in your prep course.

The first section is the Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems assessment. This section of the MCAT contains 59 questions which you must finish within 95 minutes. Ten passage-based sets of questions and 15 independent questions will assess you on your general chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, introductory physics, introductory biology, and basic biochemistry knowledge. An MCAT class can help you review specific content such as the function of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body as well as the basic chemical and physical principles of all living systems. You will also want to review the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of human tissues, organs, and organ systems. You will need to be able to relate these concepts to the laws of physics.

The next section assesses your Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. This section contains 53 questions based on nine passages. Each passage will require you to answer up to seven questions based on the content within. This section specifically focuses on your verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and analytical skills. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of the subjects in the passages of this portion of the exam, as all answers will come directly from the passages. You will, however, want to brush up on your knowledge of the basic components of a text and how to integrate different components to increase your understanding of what the text is trying to convey. You will need to be able to draw conclusions from the compositional elements of the given passages.

The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section is another 59-question section containing 10 passage-based sets of questions along with 15 independent questions. For this section, your MCAT review should include the processes unique to living organisms, scientific inquiry and reasoning skills, and foundational concepts of biology and biochemistry. Your MCAT course can also help you review how cells and organ systems work to grow and reproduce.

The final section is Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, which consists of 59 questions you must finish within 95 minutes. This section follows the same question format as the two previous sections, with 10 passage-based sets of questions and 15 independent questions. This part of the MCAT focuses specifically on the skills you will need in order to serve a diverse population. You will want to review mental health issues as well as the human and social issues which affect the field of medicine. An MCAT review course can help you review the concepts learned in your biology, introductory psychology, and introductory sociology courses in order to help you feel confident in your abilities to do well on this part of the exam.
