It wasn't until college, when I was able to take classes I really had an interest in, that I finally began to excel. Now, to be clear, I didn't just suddenly wake up "smart" one day (although that would've been nice). The reason I was doing so well was because, in the past, if I found a subject boring, or...

Recent CLEP Human Growth and Development Tutoring Session Notes
We went over the basics of the SSAT, the differences between the SSAT and the SAT, and essay writing for standardized tests. We also explored some of the students interests which include soccer and outer space. This led to a conversation about Arthur Miller's The Crucible, which led to an impromptu lesson on the Salem Witch Trials.
Today we discussed the essay portion of the entry exam. Part of her problem according to the comments she got on her last two essays was that she wasn't giving enough detail in the body paragraphs, so we discussed how to brainstorm for more details. We also went over good ways to structure the essay and what kind of examples they look for. We then weighed on the reading section, mostly on strategy.
We first reviewed some problems that the student did over the past week--focusing on those she had trouble with. We then spent the rest of the session going over the geometry she needs to know for the SAT. We also did some related problems.
Introduced the student to the layout of all four sections of the ACT. Reviewed the first 30 math questions that she completed for homework and worked on the first 15 English questions of passage 1 together. She seems to be more comfortable with the style of questions on this test as well as the liberty to guess without a penalty for wrong answers. She will get accustomed to the science questions as well as everything else when she completes the diagnostic test for homework.
The student and I used this session to go over how he can quickly come up with ideas when he is first presented with a prompt. We decided that on the day of the actual SAT he should warm up by doing a couple of prompts in the car and during breakfast so that he gets into it before the actual essay. We also reviewed when he should take each test and how he can study for the rest of the summer.
