Peter

Certified Tutor

Hello-
My name is Peter and I've lived and taught in Southern California for most of my life, until moving to Oregon to live with family. I grew up and was schooled in the public-school system, before attending California State University for my Bachelor's Degree and National University for my Graduate Teaching Degree. I have one son, two dogs and a cat.
I began as a primary school speech therapist, which I enjoyed very much, but as I worked and watched the classroom teachers I saw teaching every day, I knew that that was the job for me.
My work with young adults, in the Secondary and Community College Education Systems, their struggles and successes, is my job. For twenty years, as a classroom teacher I've defined strategies for making those successes happen. They all begin the same (of course)...meeting the student's needs where they are, now. This then evolves into each student's own unique success...every one of them; and they're all exciting to watch.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd discuss their thoughts as to why and how my assistance would help them successfully complete the project or class.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By showing them their progress.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By giving them tools for breaking more difficult concepts into smaller, more manageable ones.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Meet the student with the curriculum; don't bring the student to where the curriculum sits.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help improve study habits and teach study skills.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I find out what the difficult part is and work through it.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience and listening.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I make intellectual connections with an area or areas that do interest the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use measured informal assessments, periodic reviews, and question and answer sessions.
