Certified Tutor

I believe strongly that it is possible to succeed at anything, if you are willing to dedicate yourself to it. I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential as my own personal goal. When I worked as a tutor at the Burbridge Athletics Academic Center at the University of Utah, where I also earned my Bachelors of Science in Physics, I developed a passion for education, which I intend to continue with now that I have moved to Washington DC. I am able to tutor students in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, having developed experience as part of my pursuit of that degree. I also have an intense interest in History, which I pursued in my general educational requirements of that same degree. I am a kinesthetic learner, and I believe that the best way to develop an understanding of a subject is to do, rather than watch or listen.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

It depends largely on the magnitude of their struggle with reading comprehension. If it is only minorly disruptive to tutoring, I am more than willing to work through it. Otherwise, I would have to evaluate it on a case by case basis.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

It is of great importance to understand your student's learning style, and if they themselves don't know, to help them discover it.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I think it is important to go through questions together so that my students understand that all the problems they face are solvable.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The best method to evaluate a student's needs is to ask them about what is giving them difficulty. It has always been as simple as that.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I consider it important to focus specifically on what my students are having difficulty with while keeping in mind their learning style. This informs my use of educational materials.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I am big on paper and pencil for working on problems. For other lessons, I advocate the use of computers; all the information you could possibly need is out there if you only reach for it.
