What is your teaching philosophy?
"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think." - Albert Einstein
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and learn about the student to be able to personalize class. I would also ask and listen to what the student thinks are their strengths and weaknesses and what they identify as the best way for them to learn. It's important.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encourage them to look for and utilize outside resources such as apps, videos, message boards, etc. There are tons of resources for any topic that you find yourself interested in.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I like to try to keep students motivated by varying activities in class. Whether it's the type of problem we work or the type of learning that we change. For example, changing from problem solving to memorization to avoid redundancy.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would research to try to find a different approach to the subject so that we could try other methods of explanation and learning.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I spend a lot of time learning and thinking about context clues for unknown vocabulary words.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
My favorite strategy is to talk for a few minutes and find what it is that we have in common so that the classroom is immediately more comfortable.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would switch back and forth between content they are struggling with and content they are comfortable with to keep confidence level high.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have them work a few example problems, do activities correctly, and also explain how they would explain the concept to another person who had no knowledge of it.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Encouragement, perseverance, and a balance of small wins and challenges.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
First, I would ask them directly, and if it was still unclear, we might do some examples or take a quick assessment.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Have a variety of activities on hand for all different types of learners.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Anything from flashcards to games to textbooks. Sometimes even objects for explaining things, i.e. props.
