Mark

Certified Tutor

I work as a full stack developer for an IT Company. I have received a bachelors of science in math and computer science at the University of Houston - Downtown and a masters of science in computer science at the University of Houston - Clearlake. I am most passionate about math and computer science. I have taught community college developmental math classes for about 2 years. When I was a math student, I learn best by example and as a math teacher and tutor, I prefer to teach by example by walking through the steps and making sure the steps are understood. Also, starting off with the big picture, such as what is the purpose, is important as well. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, exercise, cooking, live music, and game design.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching allows me to share one of my biggest passions with others. I have been successful in my career and education in the area of computer science and math. Unfortunately, many students struggle with the S.T.E.M. subjects, which is why having effective teachers and tutors in the educational journey is very important. Also, making the subject fun and interesting is important as well. The relevance of computer science and math surrounds us everyday. Who doesn't own a computer, cellphone, or some programmable electronic device? As science and technology professionals, we will shape the future with our ideas and innovation. As teachers, we help guide students to their highest potential for a brighter future. When I was a student, I learned best by example; therefore, as a teacher and tutor, I prefer to teach by example by walking through the steps and making sure the steps are understood. Assessments in my classroom usually consist of quizzes, exams, homework, and projects that reflect the covered material. My goal in each class is that the students come away with a solid understanding of the main concepts and how those concepts are used. I believe each student should be respected and valued. They are the future.
