What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students can learn in a well-functioning classroom. I facilitate a comfortable, consistent learning environment that challenges students with interesting, interactive, relevant lessons. Students should walk away from my class with a deep understanding of content and a great feeling of accomplishment, as well as a sense of community.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student. Relationship building must occur before learning can.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them to be observers, to think critically, and read any and everything they can.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By setting small goals and celebrating meeting those small goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Differentiate, I would try a different approach, or try looking at the material in a new context.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are a variety of techniques. First I would make sure they knew how to make inferences and use context clues. Often reading comprehension problems result from a lack of understanding vocabulary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Ice breakers, getting to know the student. And to make the content as relevant to their lives as possible.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Again, by setting small attainable goals and showing them the results of their growth. Also by challenging them to have ownership in their education. When they have ownership, they care more and try harder.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Quick and reliable formative assessments that show me whether or not they have mastered the concepts.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By celebrating their successes, and by teaching them that making mistakes is part of the learning process.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By using the data. What do the assessments tell me?

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By figuring out how each particular student learns best then differentiating instruction for them individually.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A laptop is great, but I feel all that is really needed is something to write with, something to write on, and a willingness to learn together.
