After teaching in Nigeria for three years, I moved to Franklin, TN, where I have been teaching second grade for two years. I am passionate about intrinsically motivating my students to work hard and learn. I strive to make learning fun and interactive. To adjust to the specific needs of my students, I employ multiple methods of learning. I especially enjoy working with elementary students in any subject that they are struggling with. For the middle school and high school ages, I enjoy tutoring in: history, geography, and public speaking. What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that students learn best in a student-centered classroom where they are active participants who are intrinsically motivated. By making decisions about what and how they want to learn and being held responsible for their choices, students take ownership of their education. The role of the teacher is to guide, motivate, and support students through the learning process. I use various teaching methods that will engage all types of learners. I want to provide my students with quality content that is accurate and updated, without compartmentalizing information. I want to teach my students to develop life skills such as: critical thinking, problem solving, working with others, and self-discipline. I also reflect upon my methods and adapt them to the continually changing needs of my students.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I prefer to motivate my students intrinsically when possible. This changes dependent on the child. In general though, I try to show them how the work they are doing now is important for their future. When extrinsic motivators are necessary, I will try to work with the parent to send goals and rewards for their child.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will try to evaluate why they are struggling. I usually end up trying a few different methods to teach the same concept. For example, I might try something visual or hands-on.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are many different strategies that can be used to help a struggling reader. I usually start with trying to help them make connections with the text and their own life. From there, I will evaluate what they are struggling with and give them more strategies to put in their toolbox.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

With the students in my classroom, I always try to make learning fun. I also keep a positive attitude. I find that, many times, this is enough to help my students also feel excited and engaged. I will also try to add visual and hands-on elements to my lessons to help further their engagement.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would begin a first session by introducing myself and getting to know the family and the student. I would try to understand the child's learning styles and their strengths and weakness. The main goal would be to establish a relationship and mutual goals and expectations for the child. At the same time, I'd make the child feel comfortable and excited about learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help my students become more independent by equipping them with skills to solve problems. I also spend some time discussing the importance of hard work and challenging oneself.
