I am a Nursing Assistant, pre-med, who majored in biochemistry because the molecular world
fascinates me. My interest in biochemistry caused me to investigate and develop a passion for
studying the human body. I have a passion for helping people and I care about people young and old.
This is the basis of my desire to attend medical school.

Taking a human physiology class in the spring semester of my junior year of college was the initial
catalyst that led to my decision to become a doctor. I had been following my interests up to that point,
and my interest in studying the human body started me on the path that I am on today. While I did not
begin my journey with an ambition to become a doctor, experiences throughout my life have prepared
me to make the decision to become a doctor. I remember discovering in kindergarten that I was a
highly empathetic person. The first job that I dreamed of was becoming a veterinarian because of my
love for animals. Being the first member of my family to work in healthcare makes me proud of the
journey that led me to decide to become a doctor. I made this decision just weeks before my senior
year in college began.

In May 2014, I graduated with a degree in biochemistry from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln
knowing that my next step was to discover what it meant to be a doctor. The more involved that I have
become in the medical field, the stronger my desire to be a doctor becomes.

As a Nursing Assistant in a Mohs surgery and dermatology practice, I bring patients into a room to
gather information to present to the doctor. I have found it difficult, yet necessary to defer offering
advice when a patient asks me a question. I want strongly to have the education and ability to offer
medical advice on my own, but to do this I will need a formal medical education. I enjoy sharing what I
have learned with people who are looking to improve their lives, and I want to have the ability to do
this. My job as a Nursing Assistant makes me optimistic about my future because I love my work, and I
look forward to a future where I am more capable to help people in need of medical attention.
Working in a Mohs surgery and dermatology practice has been the greatest confirmation that I want to
train to become a practicing physician. I enjoy aspects of every activity that I am allowed to do as a
Nursing Assistant, and this makes me excited to learn more ways to help people. Observing surgeries
has taught me what a special thing it is to have the ability to help people with my hands as well as my
mind. Dermatology has given me insight into the gambit of medical fields and specialties, and I look
forward to clinical rotations so that I can experience each specialty.

The conversations that I have had with patients, the words of encouragement they have provided, and
the confidence that patients have in me is a great inspiration to become a doctor. I can not count all of
the patients who have said that I will be a great doctor; some patients tell me this every time they see
me. I remember a discussion with a patient who was a retired dentist. He had decided to pursue dental
school instead of medical school because he was interested in working at dentistry as a career rather
than practicing medicine as a lifestyle. This was an enlightening conversation because I realized that
the same statement confirmed my decision to become a doctor. I don't stop thinking about patients
after I leave the office. I enjoy researching unique cases when I am at home, and I enjoy engaging in
medical conversations with neighbors or friends.

I enjoy research. I have been involved in three different types of research, and I enjoy working with
people the most. As a doctor I would be interested in pursuing clinical trials as a way to further medical
research while remaining involved in patient care. I work with an expert on schizophrenia to map the
epigenetics involved in schizophrenia onset. The application of Dr. William Walsh's research, using
nutrients like zinc, SAMe, or vitamins to improve mental illnesses is inspiring. I enjoy being able to
improve the lives of people, and I like medical research because it enables me to help more people.
I like what my life has become since graduating from college. I feel like I exist to serve people, and this
is a good purpose for life. I hope to attain a medical education so that I can be qualified to provide
medical care on my own.
