I am here to help you succeed. But what does it mean to succeed? I think success is not simply a matter of knowledge or ability; it is also about attitude and confidence. Through working with me as your tutor, I hope to help you develop your confidence in your abilities and cultivate a positive attitude that allows you to tackle any challenge that comes your way.

One of the ways that you can become a better learner is to understand your own learning style. One way of breaking this down is as follows: visual, verbal, and kinesthetic. Visual learners are people who like to use pictures and images to further their understanding of something. Verbal learners work best with words, whether they be speech or writing. Kinesthetic learners take in knowledge by using their body and sense of touch. As a tutor, I hope to help you find which styles, or combination of styles, works best for you. This way, you know better how to study on your own, and you can develop your skills at becoming an independent learner.

So here is a little about me:
I grew up in the beautiful county of Marin, just north of San Francisco, California. There, I attended Marin Academy, a private high school that prepared me very well for my time earning my undergraduate degree at Brown University (Class of 2013). I have always been a hard worker when it comes to academics, and I understand what it takes, in terms of study skills and organization, to excel in school. I am excited to be able to give back and use my excellent education to share my knowledge with students who are struggling.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I really like to get to know my student's learning style so I can tailor my teaching methods to best suit them. Some people are visual learners; others are auditory or kinesthetic.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would chat with the student a bit first so we could get to know each other. I'd ask them what their goals for tutoring are and what their learning style is like.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help students become independent learners by teaching them study skills and critical thinking skills, so they are more self-reliant.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I always try to point out students' strengths so they can take pride in what they do well, without dwelling too much on what they still need to work on.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain the concept to them in a different fashion (for example using pictures rather than words), and make sure that it is something we review every session.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I think subjects become more engaging when a student understands the real-world relevance of the subject matter, so I would try to apply the subject to other things they are already interested in. For instance, I might relate math to music for a student who is an avid musician.
