Mrunal

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. I got my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering in December 2012. While in high school and in college I worked as a private tutor for high school students and was a teaching assistant for 2 classes in college. I also tutoring elementary school students in math. I currently work at Wells Fargo as an analytics consultant and enjoy tutoring students in math! I think the key to being a great tutor is having patience and remembering to smile! Students enjoy learning more when the teachers are also fun and happy. Outside of work, I love traveling, cooking, and playing Candy Crush on my phone!

What is your teaching philosophy?

Making it enjoyable for the student! If they are having fun they are more likely to understand what they are learning :)

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Understand their learning style so I can adjust the way I teach them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Work patiently with the student, and find alternate methods of teaching until the student understands the concept.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Create an incentive system so there is a goal in mind to keep them motivated.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to approach the subject matter in a way that interests the student by relating it to other topics/hobbies that they are passionate about.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Practice. Practice. Practice. Give them plenty of practice problems until they feel confident.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Lots of paper, markers, and a calculator!

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Get to know the student and what kind of learner they are. Ascertain whether they are visual learners or listeners, as that helps change the method of teaching.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice problems. The more practice problems the student is able to answer on his/her own, the better they understand the material!
