About Me and Tutoring Philosophy
I graduated from the University of Kansas with bachelor's degrees in accounting and finance and also hold a master's degree in computational finance from American University. After finishing my education, I spent 5 years in the Navy on active duty. Always a lifelong learner, I am presently working on a certificate in computer science and a Master's in Data Science/Business Analytics. With over 9 years of tutoring experience, I am passionate about working with all students, especially those needing assistance in finance, accounting, mathematics, and computer science/programming courses because these subjects present so many opportunities for problem solving and students to obtain that "aha" moment. That said, I am qualified and willing to help you reach success in all the subjects in which I am approved to tutor.
I started tutoring classmates informally while in college and accepted several teaching assistant positions that enabled me to clearly explain course concepts to students with various backgrounds. Instead of lecturing students, I subscribe to a learn by doing method that enables students to articulate core concepts in their own words after hearing an explanation and always provide guidance that aid in understanding.
Each of us has a different way of absorbing new ideas and frameworks, and to be aware of those critical differences in learning styles is tantamount to your success. In some rigorous coursework, it can be so tempting to give up and settle for a grade that does not reflect your true potential. However, with the right attitude and patience, you will be on the fast track to getting the most value out of a class because I am willing to go to great lengths to ensure my students have the resources and training to succeed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'll discuss expectations with the student and plan specific and measurable goals that we can work towards as a team.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Positive reinforcement and encouragement. I'll never quit on a student, especially if that student wants to quit on themselves.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
After careful observation of the student's thought patterns, I leverage years of tutoring experience to explain ideas and concepts in a way that meets the student at their current level of understanding.
